Covid-19 Update: Golf courses and facilities must close with immediate effect

The UK Government has announced a complete lockdown of England with immediate effect.

This means everyone must work from home where possible, except for critical workers, and it will supersede all local restrictions currently in place.

Golf clubs, golf facilities – both indoor and outdoor – and driving ranges will be required to close during this full lockdown. As such, coaching will not be permitted.

Golf retailers will be able to operate a click-and-collect service where goods are pre-ordered and either collected off the premises or delivered.

England Golf – as part of the All-Party Parliamentary Group for Golf along with other leading industry bodies – is extremely disappointed with the news, having made a strong case in recent months to keep golf open during the national lockdowns and in the regional tier system.

It is with great regret that we share this news with you, but please be assured that we will continue to make the case for golf to reopen whenever possible.

The England Golf website and social channels are regularly updated and we will communicate any new information as soon as it is available.

The latest Coronavirus updates will be shown here

Jan Competitions

Due to the current Covid situation we have decided to cancel all the comps planned for Jan.

We will review later on in Jan and if we can play in 3 or 4 balls hopefully if the situation improves we hope to play the Feb ones as planned.

Please safe, stay safe

Have a happy 2021

Covid-19 Update:

Golf courses remain open in Tier 4

Covid-19 Update: Golf courses remain open in Tier 4 locations

Following Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s address to the nation tonight, London and areas of the south east of England will move to Tier 4 alert level from tomorrow (Sunday 20 December).

Golf courses in Tier 4 areas can remain open for play in the following formats:

Individual play
Two-balls from same or different households/bubbles
Three or fourballs involving people from the same household/bubble
The All-Party Parliamentary Group for Golf – of which England Golf is a member – has issued the following statement addressing issues of play, retail, coaching and travel:

“The All-Party Parliamentary Group for Golf is happy to confirm that golf courses will be able to remain open when the new Tier 4 restrictions become effective in parts of England from 06:00 GMT on Sunday 20th December.

“In Tier 4 areas, golf courses can remain open for individuals playing with members of their own household or support bubble, or with one person from another household.

“As usual, social distancing is to be observed and all necessary steps are to be taken to ensure a COVID-19 secure environment.

“Under Tier 4 restrictions, non-essential retail – including Pro Shops and golf retailers – must close. Click and Collect will, however, be permitted.

“Outdoor coaching will be allowed on an individual basis or for multiple members of the same household or support bubble. Indoor coaching will be not be permitted.

“There are exceptions for indoor disability sport, sport for educational purposes, and supervised sport and physical activity for under-18s, which can take place with larger groups mixing.

“Custom fitting can take place outside on a one-to-one basis but is not permitted indoors.

“Some golf ranges can be classified as indoor settings, but it would be for each facility to read and interpret the guidelines against their own venue – it is suggested that if confirmation is required they contact their local authority who will be best placed to advise.

“Unless it’s essential for work or other reasons, Tier 4 areas must not be left by occupants or entered by anybody from a Tier 1, 2 or 3 area. Full details of Tier 4 guidance can be found on the government’s website.”

I am sorry it is so late in the day but i guess it is another punch to roll with in 2020.

So due to the new laws this is what I intend to do for the next few days

Play will be in 2 balls ONLY. I am sorry for those that have more golfers in their household however in the interest of keeping pace of play I am restricting play to no more than 2 balls.

Any current bookings are for 9 holes only.. With all our members and the shorter daylight hours the only way we can give you all a chance to play is to restrict play to 9 holes per day.

The pro shop will be as it was after the first lock down with a table at the front door for cards and such.

Lessons will still run on a one on one basis as above and the driving range is open also.

The All-Party Parliamentary Group for Golf (APPGG) consists of MPs and Peers from any political party working with industry bodies to provide direction for golf during the COVID-19 crisis. The group is chaired by Craig Tracey (MP for North Warwickshire), with the industry represented by the following organisations: American Golf; The Belfry; the British and International Golf Greenkeepers Association; the British Golf Industry Association; England Golf; the Golf Club Managers’ Association; Golf Ireland; the Golfing Union of Ireland; the Irish Ladies’ Golf Union; IMG; The Professional Golfers’ Association; PING; The R&A; Scottish Golf; Syngenta; the UK Golf Federation; Wales Golf

Dear All,

It is with great disappointment I am sending this email to advise you that following the Government announcement yesterday, we will be cancelling the Hillman Trophy competition for 2020 and consequently the Hillman Plate.

We have received the news from several Clubs that they have already taken the decision to close their clubhouses and provide reduced sessions. It would therefore be unfair to expect them to host visiting Hillman Teams.

We will of course provide refunds for the entry fees paid or a credit for the 2021 competition - we will be in touch with Club Managers regarding this.

I wish you all the very best in these difficult times and look forward to better golfing days ahead.

Kind regards,
